Oil & Grass sits on 17 Ave SW, right in the middle of the Red Mile — surrounded by the restaurants, patios and record shops that make this stretch of Calgary what it is. We opened in 2023 and we’ve been here every day since.
We’re a privately held Alberta corporation, which is a very formal way of saying: it’s us. There’s no franchise agreement, no head office in another province deciding what goes on our shelves, and nobody upstairs setting a quota on what you get talked into buying.
What that actually buys you is simple. Come in once and we’ll help you find something that works. Come in twice and we’ll remember what it was.

Tim Wardell and Darryl Stanat have been in Alberta cannabis retail since the industry started — first with Oakridge Cannabis, now here. They still budtend. They still do the buying. Tim still makes the little licence-plate product labels by hand, one at a time, which is either charming or slightly unhinged depending on who you ask.
If you’re getting a recommendation at Oil & Grass, there’s a good chance it’s coming from the person who signed the lease.

Ask Tim what’s actually landing well this week and he’ll tell you the truth, even when the honest answer is the cheaper jar. He built this menu one product at a time.

Genuinely, deeply into hash — ask him and clear your schedule. Darryl’s whole approach is finding the thing that works for you, and he won’t upsell you to get there.

Our shelves are built around three things: a flavour profile worth talking about, THC that actually does something, and an effect you can feel without squinting for it.
That means the menu moves. We chase the good harvests, the growers who are having a great year, and the small local brands nobody’s heard of yet. Some things stay forever. Some things get one run and never come back. You’ll always find your regular, and you’ll usually find something new sitting beside it.
Every shelf is labelled properly, in detail, so you can make your own call before anyone says a word to you. We’re happy to talk. You just shouldn’t have to.

Dry weed is a solved problem and we take it personally. Pack dates get checked, stock gets rotated, and anything past its best comes off the shelf before you ever see it. If something isn’t right when you get it home, bring it back and talk to us — you’ll be talking to an owner.

Oakridge Cannabis was our first shop, and it’s still going strong in Calgary’s southwest — same owners, same standards, same refusal to sell anybody tired flower. If you’re closer to Oakridge than you are to us, go see them. It’s the same handshake.
